Upon meeting the egg, the sperm must penetrate its tough outer membrane. Only a single sperm will be allowed in. A new organism is created when the nuclei of the sperm and egg are combined. The very first stage of pregnancy is now complete, but the longest part – the development of a combined cell into a baby – lies ahead. At first, you won’t be aware of the changes in your body, although the new life just created can make some women nauseous and cause breast tenderness.
