At the end of week 14, the fetus’s hands have changed proportionally in comparison to the body, the legs are stretched out, his neck has grown longer and your child’s jaw no longer lies on the chest. Your baby’s skin is thin, reddish, and covered with fine hair and an oily substance known as vernix. Your baby is starting to grow hair on its head. The growing fetus moves its hands, legs, and head around, actively squinting his closed eyes; he frowns and grimaces. Your child will grab and suck his thumb quite often. The baby will continue to urinate into the amniotic fluid, which is a normal process and will continue up until birth.
You may notice a dark, vertical line running downwards from your navel, this is called the linea nigra. It is caused by a rise in melanin pigmentation during pregnancy. The darker your skin, the more noticeable the line. It will fade out after some time when the baby is born. If you don’t feel comfortable with it, eat fiber-rich foods and drink plenty of water. If you or your partner have had chromosomal abnormalities in your family, make sure you will let your doctor know about it.
