12th Week of Pregnancy

The fetus is over 8 centimeters long and weighs around 15 grams. The fetus is swimming around in the womb and has developed sucking and swallowing reflexes. His lungs are also developing and he will make his first breathing movements, which is also known as fetal breathing. The formation of nerve cells makes it possible for the fetus to feel pain to a limited extent.

His face seems quite human now and milk teeth are beginning to form inside his gums. When you listen to your baby’s heartbeat at the doctor’s or midwife’s office, it will sound like the hoofs of a galloping horse. With this sound, you can be reassured that a miscarriage is unlikely. First-time mothers might be able to hide their pregnancy by flexing their abdominal muscles but with following pregnancies, the growing belly will be visible to others around 12 weeks. The uterus is growing and expanding upwards over the pelvic bone and the doctor will soon be able to feel it on your belly. Your uterus is measuring between 12-14 centimeters and will grow over a centimeter a week, reaching 37-42 cm by the end of pregnancy.

Since you are visibly pregnant, now might be a good time to let your extended family, friends, and colleagues know that you are expecting.

Also, you will probably have to buy larger clothes because your old clothes just won’t fit anymore. It doesn’t mean that you have to lounge around in trainers, sweatpants, and flip flops for the rest of the pregnancy. You can wear extremely comfortable and beautiful clothes whilst pregnant. Consider acquiring clothes that are designed to increase in size quite a lot. And finally, you hardly need to be reminded but you must not smoke whilst pregnant, make sure you don’t!
